Digital reading cannot surpass print, say educationists

Digital reading cannot surpass print, say educationists

With a surge in popularity of e-books, online learning and the Central government’s “Digital India” campaing, the big question which pops up is whether digital is an ultimate substitute of print?

Recently, the Ministry of Human Resource and Development (MHRD) celebrated National Digital Reading Day on the completion of National Digital Library project with assistance of the IIT Kharagpur.

The top engineering institute at present is providing digital content to all higher educational institutes and libraries through 1.54 lakh digital books, journals and audio books.

City-based educationists feel that digital reading is supplementary to paper reading and cannot surpass print.

Tarsem Bahia, education adviser said, “There are thousands of villages in our country which have no access to electricity and computers. Digital reading for them is not feasible. Digital access can be used as a supplement but not as a substitute of print. One can always acquire additional knowledge from the internet and read online.”

Anu Verma, principal, Police DAV School said, “The print can’t be replaced in any way even though digital culture is ushering in. Online reading might be benefitting many kids but majority of them find print satisfactory.”

She said, “When it comes to digital reading there are lots of distractions on the internet and mobile phones. Whereas, when you are reading a book, the attention is undivided.”
Amandeep, an avid reader and regular visitor at the Panjab University’s Regional Centre Extension Library said, “It is no wonder that students have caught fancy of online books. During our times, we not only used to read books but exchange it with our loved ones as well. Everything is available on the internet which is a good thing but print has its own flavour. In coming years there can be a change in preferences.”
