5 WAYS TO Efficiently Work Part Time
Part-time work and workfrom-home
policies are fast gaining acceptance in the corporate world. While some
organisations are adopting them to help employees achieve work-life balance,
others are considering them as measures to beat traffic woes, pollution and
stress. ET's Prachi Verma Dadhwal share's experts' views on how to work part
time efficiently.
1 Prioritise
Before
opting for a part-time work model, one needs to set priorities in an order that
is both aligned to the organisation's interest and yours. Your organisation
should be aware of your decision to work part time, the arrangement for
part-time work and its duration. “It is imperative that both you and your
organisation have your expectations from each other clearly chalked out,“ says
Swapnil Kamat, founder & CEO of Work Better Training. Harsh Lambah, country
manager of Regus India, says it is best to enlist the support of another work
partner, if necessary.
2 Be
Disciplined to Deliver
Unless
you are disciplined, the part-time or work-from-home will NOT work for you.
While working, be sure you only do one thing at a time.Else, this would mess up
your work as well as personal commitments.“Using a disciplined work style will
allow you to complete your assignment in a focused and timely manner. It's
tough while working parttime, and those who are disciplined can deliver on a
regular basis,“ says Lambah. Kamat says, “The line between your work and
personal hours should not blur and eat into the other regularly.“
3 Workspace
at Home
You
must have space at home that helps you divide home from work. This workspace at
home should be close to what you have at office. This space at home should be
devoid of any distractions, like music and television. “Given that most Indian
homes don't have that luxury of space, it makes more sense to opt for a
business centre or co-working space. It will reduce distractions that you'll
have to deal with at home,“ says Lambah.
4 Do not
Compromise on Work
“Remember
when you work part time, it is only your physical presence from your workplace
that has changed and gone down in terms of number of hours,“ says Kamat. The
amount of work you are expected to do remains the same.
5 Make the
Best of Technology
While
working part time, technology like smartphone, video conferencing and emails
should be exploited well. One can work from anywhere and anytime and yet be
connected to his office and peer group. “Smartphone apps and other mobile
devices are best while working on the move and navigating a hectic work
schedule,“ says Lambah. “Silence the critics by showing them that irrespective
of where you work from, and how many hours you clock in during the week, your
work does not suffer and your productivity remains good,“ says Kamat.
