Trai plans
platform for people to register issues regarding data shocks
TRAI
chairman RS Sharma on Thursday said that the regulator was mulling on putting
up a platform where people would be able to surface their problems
regarding data shocks.
“Trai
has no provision to address individual problems. But it is true that we often
get such complaints of data shock. For example the pack is suddenly exhausted
and it eats up your main balance fast or your bill shoots up. Service providers
have their complaining authority but then people are not satisfied because they
think why would the same people be judging the complaints made against the
company itself? We are trying to set up a technology-based platform which can
work as a consumer grievance redressal platform,” Sharma said at an event
organised by the MCC Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
Referring
to the penalty which would be imposed on mobile service providers with effect
from January 1, 2016 for dropped calls, he said, “It will not be a remedy but
why should the consumer suffer? Any deficiency in service must be compensated.
Let us hope it works.”
Amit
Kumar Bhattacharya, chief general manager, BSNL, however supplemented that
mobile handsets were far more harmful especially if used at a low signal zone
or with low battery.
As
far as better services were concerned Shamra said that the Centre had decided
that mobile towers can be built on government buildings. “We have clearly said
that towers must be established on government buildings but of course the
concerned state government will have to be contacted. India is a federal
country. I can’t ask the government of West Bengal to install a tower on the
Writers Buildings. We are trying to work with the state governments,” he
added.
During
the session, he also dismissed the probabilities of any ill-effects from the
telephone towers. “It is a complete myth. First it is not radiation. These are
frequency bands. The effect of the radio waves is similar to what the sunlight
does, what the microwave does and what the television does. It is absolutely
not harmful …,” he said.
