Little Data in Library & Information Centre

Little Data in Library & Information Centre

All that investigation of big data is going to result in little data, which is nothing but personalized data.

It is not just personal data, but also actionable data that’s called Little Data.

Big Data vs. Little Data

Big Data can be defined what organization knows about their stakeholders, while little data is what we know about ourselves.

Big Data may differ with little data in the below-mentioned characteristics:

  • Focal point – Big data is for organizational goals, while little data is for personal achievements
  • Visibility – Individual can experience the big data, while little data helps them to see better
  • Control – Organization can control the Big data, while individuals control little data

Little Data (user perspective) in Library & Information Science Domain

It can play an essential role in the information domain, and it can be a coordination link between Library User & LIS Professional.

The LIS professional, if they are tracking library users for their Research, Reference, or Referral query, then it will be an easy task for LIS professionals to create an innovative strategy to serve their user.

To explain further, I will take an example of CAS & SDI services in the Library. If we collected the little data in a properly structured manner, then it will be easy for LIS professionals to provide the services mentioned above to the users.

Google tools & App-based applications can use collectively to provide such types of services to the user.

  1. Interesting. However the idea needs to be more elaborated. Nice attempt.

There's an interesting article on the above link. SDI which we all had been practicing can be classed as little data. KM indeed was an effort to bring, to use, otherwise gone waste data. Have we had any headway in KM yet?

  3. We can also further classify it as micro data and macro data.
