Indian
Institute of Technology (IIT)- Guwahati, OP Jindal Global University and Anna
University in Chennai are the three Indian universities which have made it to
the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) top 150 young universities globally.
“The top
young universities are those which are in shortest span of establishment have
been able to make a big impact. These universities are under the 50 years of
age,” said Ashwin Fernandes, Regional Director-Middle East, North Africa and
South-Asia, QS Intelligence Unit.
Academic
reputation, citations per faculty, student-faculty ratio, international faculty
and international students are the factors which are taken into consideration
while selecting the institutes, he added. Beyond the rank 50, the institutes
are grouped in bands. IIT-Guwahati is ranked at the band of 71-80 while Anna
University and OP Jindal are in the 101-150 band. Singapore’s Nanyang
Technological University (NTU) has topped the list followed by The Hong Kong
University of Science and Technology.
Australia is
the most-represented location in the top 50, with nine featured universities.
University of Technology Sydney is at 11th spot. “We are focussed on the social
sciences, arts, humanities and professional studies. We have stayed away from
pure sciences, engineering and medicine which makes this achievement even more
special,” said Raj Kumar, Founding Vice-Chancellor, OP Jindal Global
University.
