Delhi Government Starts ‘Spoken English’ Course for Government School Students
Soon, government school students in Delhi can take up spoken English course as the Education Department has planned to launch the course with the aim of enabling students to enhance their English-speaking skills.
The course which is set to begin from June 2018 is likely to serve as a cheaper alternative to private English schools in India.
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal recently tweeted saying, “Government school students mostly come from economically poor backgrounds. When I meet them, their biggest demand was – Sir, hame English bolna sikhwa dijiye. I am so happy that this course is now starting for government school students.”
The Course Development
As reported by Times Of India, the programme has been developed in collaboration with the British Council, India-McMillan Education, Academy for Computers Training (Gujarat) and Trinity College, London.
The course is open for full-time regular students who have given Class 10 board exams and have passed the pre-board exams in three subjects with English as a subject reported NDTV.
Reforms in the education sector
It should be mentioned that the Delhi Education Department has been proposing a series of new programmes like providing summer camps for government school students which is aimed at helping children to enhance their skills, installing CCTV cameras, and providing self-defence training for girls among others, The Hindu reports.
Moreover, the Delhi government for the year 2018-2019 has allocated 26% of their budget for education. The total allocation of about Rs 13,997 crore is the highest among all sectors.
Of the total amount, Rs 36 crores have been allocated for the purposes of initiating new schemes as well as establishing 13 language academies.
The Logical Indian take
In a world where competition is the key to success, language often tends to become a deciding factor. Government school curriculum in India misses the mark on providing quality English education to its students which leads to underconfidence among them. Delhi Government’s initiative will most likely help the students in overcoming their fear of speaking in English as well as set an example to other state government’s as well. The Logical Indian appreciates Delhi Government for taking this initiative.
