Humanoid robot ‘Mitra’, which welcomed PM Modi and Ivanka Trump at an event last year, will teach students at ISME from the next academic year
The Indian School of Management and Entrepreneurship
(ISME) in Lower Parel plans to put humanoid robot ‘Mitra’ to co-teach classes
from the next academic year starting July.
“This will be done in phases. In the first phase, we will use it for
admission counselling, responding to FAQs and handling enrolment formalities.
In the second phase, we will program it for delivering lectures, explaining
concepts and answering students’ questions. Since this is based on artificial
intelligence (AI), the robot will learn with each step. The more they interact,
the more they learn,” said Imran Kapadia, chief digital officer at the
institute.
The first phase will last for about 60 to 90 days, roughly covering April-May,
after which work on the second phase will begin. Built by Bengaluru-based
Invento Robotics, Mitra made headlines when it welcomed Prime Minister Narendra
Modi and US President Donald Trump’s daughter and White House advisor Ivanka
Trump at an event last year.
It arrived in the city on February 5 and was assembled here.
“Even in this 21st century, we follow a 19th century curriculum which
taught by 20th century professors. The future lies in AI (artificial
intelligence), AR (Augmented Reality) and VR (Virtual Reality). That’s why we
ordered the bot,” said Dr Indu Shahani, president and chairperson, ISME and
Indian School of Design and innovation (ISDI).
ISME has two other smaller robots programmed to teach yoga to students.
“They do not speak or learn, but do activities which are pre-fed,” Kapadia
said.
“The thought of a robot taking classes sounds exciting,” said Prem Vira,
second year student of business management and entrepreneurship (BME) programme
at ISME.
