Technologically speaking @ Gadgets are playing a big role in changing the teaching-learning process

The need of the hour is to channelise the usage of technology in a positive direction to get the maximum benefits

Today, children are not just confined to the daily cycle of homework and playtime, but are doing much more. Thanks to the technological advancements which have seeped deep into the teaching-learning process. The impact is so much that today kids are up to date when it comes to technology and can handle any gadget with ease. "Today, children need to keep themselves updated with the latest happenings to sustain in this highly competitive world. And technology has proven to be extremely useful in education. Children can access the web and get detailed knowledge about any topic. Also, educational games can help them to perform well in academics," shares Raman Sidhu, principal of a school.

Technology has played a big role in changing the way children learn and get entertained. It has impacted their level of creativity and behaviour. Subodh Sharma, a parent, shares, "My daughter can handle my smartphone with ease. She knows how to play games, how to click photographs, how to access net, etc. She has become so much addicted to phone that as soon as I come home, she demands my phone.

Initially, this became a cause of worry for me and my wife, as she started becoming more attached to gadgets. But after consultation with student counsellors, we soon realised that if guided properly, students can actually learn a lot of things from such modern-day gadgets. The need is to channelise their energy in a positive direction."

According to education experts, everything has its positive and negative impacts. Same is the case with the technology. Simarpreet Singh, an educationist, opines "It is not bad to expose children to smartphones, tablets, computers, etc., but it is the role of parents to guide them on how to use this technology, and also set limits on when to use specific technological tools."

Talking about the negative effects technology has had on the kids today, Aneet Goyal, an educationist, says, "Some 15 years back, children used to play outdoor games and were physically active. Today, even a toddler wants a mobile phone to play. Today, most of the kids are either busy watching TV or playing games on smartphones. Negligible physical activity is taking a toll on their health."

According to student counsellors, parents too have to share the blame for children spending most of their time on mobiles or computers. "Several parents spend less time with their children because of their busy schedules and try to compensate that time by giving them mobile phones to play. But, this trend can have negative impact on kids' growth. This could weaken the relationship between parents and children," says Rachna Arora, a psychologist and a mother of six-year-old girl.

Giving a way out to handle such situation, Arora says, "Parents should spend more time with their kids after work and try to create a strong bond with the little ones. Nothing can compensate parents' company and the time they spend with children. Use of technology to enhance knowledge is a good thing, however, parents should be aware of what their children are doing and what's the impact technology can have on the kids' growth, both mentally and emotionally."
