Earlier, colleges within only 2 km could be
merged
The All-India
Council for Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi, has permitted existing
technical institutions for merging technical colleges running under the same
Trust/Society at various locations in the city.
Punjab
Unaided Colleges Association has been requesting the All-India Council of
Technical Education for reforming the guidelines in the handbook. Merger of
institutions is one of the biggest reforms proposed by the AICTE and this will
be very helpful to all institutions. With this major announcement by the AICTE,
the colleges now will be able to use the surplus land and building of sister
institution for other educational purposes.

If the parent institution fulfills the norms of its own and its
sister institution in terms of infrastructure, then the sister institution can
be merged. After the merger, 50 per cent land and 100 per cent infrastructure
of the sister institution can be used for any new courses introduced in the
curriculum or for the establishment of new colleges.
Anshu
Kataria, president , Punjab Unaided Colleges Association (PUCA) said PUCA had
been constantly requesting the AICTE to reform the guidelines.
Earlier,
merging of institutions was permitted within a radius of only 2 km, but now
that condition had been waived off. With this major announcement by the AICTE,
the colleges now would be able to use the surplus land and building of sister
institution for other educational purposes.
