AICTE makes online courses mandatory for new engg faculty

AICTE makes online courses mandatory for new engg faculty
Chennai: All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has made eight online courses mandatory for new faculty members and faculty members with less than five years of experience in technical institutions.

Called national initiative for technical teachers training, the courses include orientation towards technical education and curriculum aspects, professional ethics and sustainability, communication skills, modes and knowledge dissemination, instructional planning and delivery, technology enabled learning, life long self-learning, student assessment and evaluation, creative problem solving, innovation, institutional management and administrative procedures.

In a recent circular, AICTE said the courses have been made mandatory to new inductee teachers and teachers with less than five years experience in the gazette notification for seventh pay commission scale salary. “It is requested that maximum new inductee teachers and teachers with less than five years of experience be advised to register under this initiative,” the circular said.

Roughly, up to 25% faculty members in tier-1 engineering colleges and more than 50% of faculty members in tier-2 and tier-3 engineering colleges in the state will have less than five years experience.

“We have made it mandatory for all faculty members in our college with less than five years to finish the online courses. For faculty members above five years we have made it as on optional training programme,” said B Chidambararajan, principal of Valliammai Engineering College.

“The faculty members are undergoing various online training programmes as the same was linked with pay hike. But these courses are offered subsidised fees. AICTE also should consider offering these courses for a subsidised fee,” he added.

The faculty members need to pay Rs 2,000 as registration fee and Rs 1,000 for each of the eight modules.
Maluk Mohamad, chairman of MAM College of Engineering and Techology in Trichy, said teachers would take it seriously if the fee is fixed for online course. “AICTE is not asking the teachers to get extra degree. The candidates are spending lakhs of rupees for UG and PG programmes. It is not a big amount,” he said.

Faculty members said the course fee of Rs10,000 is almost one month salary for new faculty members.

“New faculty members and faculty members are receiving around Rs 10,000 a month. It would be difficult for them to pay the amount. AICTE should make it free for the faculty members till it ensures pay as per the seventh pay commission scale of pay,” said K M Karthik, president of Private Educational Institutions Employees Association.
