Educational institutes in State get a flood of books

Alibaba, private trust donate over 1.85 lakh books across subjects

Educational institutions across Maharashtra have received more than 1.85 lakh books to help students gain access to high-quality books.

The books were donated at an exhibition held at the Nava Samaj Mandal School and Nitin Godiwala College, Vile Parle (East) on Sunday. This was part of The ‘Mission Million Books’ project, launched by the Alibaba Group, in association with the Ratna Nidhi Charitable Trust, that hosted its 4th Book Donation Drive in Mumbai on Sunday.

Wide range

The books began at the kindergarten level and went up to post-graduate levels, covering subjects across the spectrum: physics, chemistry, maths, computers, geography, history, fiction, biographies, business and management, mythology, children’s literature, humanities, and religion. There were also dictionaries, encyclopedias and magazines.

The book donation exercise was a part of the #MissionMillionBooks campaign of the Corporate Social Responsibility initiative of the Alibaba Group.

‘Enhance creativity’

The exhibition was inaugurated by Dr. Swaroop Sampat Rawal, member, governing council, Maharashtra International Education Board. Speaking on the occassion, Dr. Rawal said, “Education is a priority for Maharashtra and for India. Even in this digital age, I like to read books and believe they have an important role to play. All the children here must know that books take you into a wonderful world of imagination, and enhance your creativity. Make sure you read beyond your school books.”
Rajiv Mehta of the Ratna Nidhi Trust said principals, teachers, librarians and students from schools and colleges across the State visited the exhibition and picked up more than 1.85 lakh books. B. Ravi, Professor, IIT Bombay said, “The looks on the faces of the principals as they are collecting books is priceless.” Mr. Mehta said the books donated to the educational institutions will be used to supplement libraries in their premises and establish new ones to provide students access to different kinds of books.

Vinay Bhartia, senior vice president – strategic partnership, alibaba.com said, “It is a pity that many deserving and curious children in our country do not even have access to good quality reading material. Our endeavour is to provide such material to as many youngsters as possible.”
